License variables
The necessary license variables must be defined as environment variables before the EDMserver can be started and used. Actual products must have a legal license before it can be used. Licensing of the EXPRESS Data Manager is described in the Licensing section of this document. Some license variables that are often needed are presented below:

Mandatory environment variables for using EDOM3/Java interface
The following are mandatory variables for running the Java binding of EDMinterface:

Configuration Parameters are used for many purposes in EDMsix.Some are tuning parameters to optimize the performance of your system. Some activates or deactivates features and concepts. Some are simply read only parameters with information about the EDMsix system you are running and others show the configuration of the current EDMsix application process. This page contains a complete list of all the EDMsix configuration parameters, what they do and their default values. See also the page Working with Configuration Parameters for how and when you may change them.

Setting configuration variables in environment
Environment variables may be set permanently by the Control Panel or they may be temporarily defined in a command script that must be executed in the command window in which EDM programs are started. The example below shows how the license key, can be set using these two methods:
- Open the Control panel, Settings->Control Panel.
- Select System.
- Select Advanced.
- Select Environment variables.
- Select System Variables.
- If the environment variable EDM_LIC_100 exists. Select it and press Edit. Otherwise, press New.
- Open the license file in an editor, cut the license string and paste it and enter it into the Variable Value field without leading and trailing spaces.
- Save and close before restarting the computer.
The environment variables may also be set in a command script that may be automatically executed when a command window is started. The example below shows the syntax of such a script:
